Anonymous HIV Testing

While Bangkok hospitals require a patients ID and are required to report HIV infections, there are ways to get tested anonymously. The Red Cross Bangkok provides a STD testing clinic where patients are assigned identification tags rather than having their names and address taken. HIV tests are available from 80 baht upwards. It is a much cheaper alternative to hospitals that charge up to 3800 Thai Baht for testing. The clinic also provides tests for Hepatitis, Syphilis and CD4 viral load.

Bangkok Hospital for HIV and AIDS

There have been various comments asking for names and addresses of Bangkok hospitals who provide HIV testing. Basically, all clinics and hospitals do. I have found two reliable resources with fursther information:
Dragon Castle - a gay community website with a short list of clinics, hospitals and health organizations in Thailand. Some places offer anonymous testing.
Thai Visa - Thailand's largest expat forum offers links for people living with AIDS in Thailand and provides information on where to get tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted deceases. Some users list names of individual doctors who specialize in treatment of AIDS patients, analysis of viral load test results of CD4 cells and diagnosis of first AIDS symptoms.

Bangkok Pharmacies sell HIV test kits otc

I was wondering why the previous owner of this domain was selling his HIV tests by mailorder (they were mostly advertised in bars and on nightlife related websites). During my last visit to Thailand I visited various pharmacies in Bangkok in Pattaya to find that most of them sell HIV quick tests over the counter. It's a simple HIV antibody test. The going rates for the HIV test kits range from 150 Thai Baht to 600 Baht. Closer to tourist and nightlife attractions located pharmacies would try to make more profit while other shops would sell them for lower prices. If you live in Bangkok there is absolutely no need to get the kits over a mailorder biz. Just go to any Bangkok pharmacy and purchase them directly.
Of course, some people argue it is better to get tested in a first class Thai hospital or in various institutions that offer anonymous blood tests. I will try to come up with a list of Bangkok hospitals and HIV doctors that offer tests and counseling in my next HIV blog post.
